Tumblr Inspiration: The Pacific Northwest

Lately I've been feel really down and uninspired. I'm kind of in a summer slump. Does that happen to anybody else? I actually miss the routine of school, no matter how busy or stressful it gets. I miss seeing Garrett and all my friends. And you know what? It's just too hot. I can't stand it.

Feeling this way has got me thinking about my future. I've only got one year left of college. After that, I do a music therapy internship, get certified, then I'm off into the real world! And I've found myself thinking, where do I want my real world to be? Definitely not back home. Although Houston is so familiar to me, I just don't feel the same about it after going to Charlotte for school and growing up. It's almost like I'm growing out of this city, even though its incredibly huge!

Whenever I envision my future, I see it in the mountains. That sounds a bit weird and vague, but I've truly always been fascinated with mountains. Growing up in Houston means rarely ever even seeing a hill. And mountains represent stability, which I something I think I strive for always.

Mountains also (usually) mean cold weather, which is definitely a must-have for me. I have spent Christmas in upper Michigan, so I do know just how cold cold can get. But I absolutely love it. And after giving it some thought, I realized that somewhere in the Pacific Northwest is exactly where I want to be. This all might be super cheesy, but I don't care. I want to go there and I will.

THIS is what inspires me. Where I envision myself. Where I'll make my family. Where I will grow and go on great adventures and become closer to who I really am. And maybe that's too optimistic of me. But I don't care. I'm going to do it anyways.

This Week's Playlist

So it's been a while since I last posted! Unfortunately I forgot my laptop charger at my moms (who lives kinda far from my dads) so I was without a laptop this week. But now I have it and I'm ready to tell y'all about my favorite music picks this week! :)

Lana Del Rey: Once again she's my first pick of the week. I can't get enough of her music. I'm so excited about her new album, Honeymoon, and this week the first track of the album was released (also called Honeymoon!). This song did NOT disappoint! It's slow, with focus on complex and beautiful harmonies. Lana's voice is truly the star of this song, along with the supporting violins that create an old hollywood feel. My absolute favorite part of the song is during the lyrics, "dark blue." It's really short but the harmonies are so perfect there!

The Killers: This band is such a classic for me. I go through phases where I listen to them all the time or not at all. Right now I'm getting into that phase where I'm starting to listen to them more and more! My favorite songs right now are All These Things That I've Done, Spaceman, and A Dustland Fairytale. The last one is my absolute favorite. The lyrics, vocals, and background music work so well together! This song has one of my favorite lyrics from this band!
"Now, Cinderella, don't you go to sleep / it's such a bitter form of refuge / Why, don't you know the kingdom's under siege, / And everybody needs you? / Is there still magic in the midnight sun, / or did you leave it back in '61? / In the cadence of a young man's eyes / Out where the dreams all hide"
I'd love to hear what y'all are listening to right now!

Friday Netflix Favorite: Chopped!

Happy Friday everyone! I hope everyone's had a great week and has some fun weekend plans!

As I'm starting this new blog, I've been thinking of what I want to write about. As I'm going through my general interests, of course Netflix came up! I use Netflix for pretty much all of my tv watching, even when I'm home for the summer.

I figured I'd like to showcase my favorite netflix shows, and hear suggestions from all of you! And what's better to start with than one of my favorite shows EVER: Chopped!

My favorite host, Ted Allen, ready to chop! Picture found
here, an amazing article about Chopped!

Ever since I discovered Chopped on Food Network, I've been absolutely obsessed. I love the concept of the mystery baskets, and how creative and crazy they get! One of the most memorable baskets I can remember is an entree round that included astronaut ice cream!

I also love how some episodes have a theme. Some notable ones for me were "Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner," where the rounds were changed to that from the regular appetizer, entree, and dessert! That was so fun to watch, although I definitely missed the dessert round! Another fun one to watch was "Teen Invasion." It was so inspiring to see such young chefs compete and make brilliant dishes!

In addition to the awesome, creative chefs, I love the Chopped judges! If I had to choose my dream panel, it'd be Geoffrey Zakarian, Alex Guarneschelli, and Scott Conant. All three judges are really inspiring to me! If you are even a little bit of a foodie, I highly recommend you follow them on instagram!

Speaking of instagram, one of my best instagram moments is when GEOFFREY ZAKARIAN COMMENTED ON MY INSTAGRAM POST. (/cue me, fainting, and probably crying). I received his AMAZING cookbook, My Perfect Pantry, for this past valentine's day! I posted it on instagram, shamelessly tagged GZ, and when I realized he commented, I probably had a meltdown for hours. I WAS SO EXCITED. LOOK AT THIS.

Chopped has a special place in my heart. I even sent an application to be on it once! Although I don't consider myself a cook of chef caliber, I figure it was worth a try! They were currently casting for an undergrad-themed episode, which would have been perfect for me! Unfortunately I didn't hear back, but I still feels cool to say I did it :)

What are y'all's favorite netflix shows? I'm always up to hear new suggestions!

This Week's Playlist

What I'm listening to this week:

Lana Del Rey: Lately I've been absolutely obsessed with her albums Born to Die and Ultraviolence. I play these albums literally everywhere. Some of my favorite songs are Born to Die, Without You, Old Money, Cruel World, and my absolute favorite currently, Brooklyn Baby. One reason I adore Lana's music is her lyrics, mainly because of the imagery she expresses. One of my favorite lyrics is from her song Yayo. Although the lyrics look pretty simple, they way she sings them really brings them to life.
"Hello, heaven, you are a tunnel lined / with yellow lights on a dark night"
The Fray: I've loved them ever since middle school. For a while I haven't really been into listening to them, but lately they've kind of made a comeback for me. Currently my favorite song by them is Munich. Like Lana's Yayo, the lyrics in this song are really simple. But the music really gives them emotion, especially in the chorus! I haven't really listened much to their newest album, Helios, though. I really love their older stuff. Some other songs I'm loving by them right now are Vienna, Uncertainty, and Boulder to Birmingham, which has some of my favorite lyrics. The harmony in this song is breathtaking.
"And I don't want to hear a sad story / Full of heartbreak and desire / The last time I felt like this / It was in the wilderness and the canyon was on fire"
Brooke Waggoner: Another amazing artist that I've listened to since middle school, and again a recent rediscovery for me. Her creative style inspires me every time I listen to her. My current favorite songs are Wonder-Dummied, My Legionnaire, and Fresh Pair of Eyes. I absolutely love her use of piano and strings, which is really prominent in Wonder-Dummied. I love to hear her thematic transformations in this song! Of course, her lyrics are always amazing as well.
"And ask for the things you lack in heart / And you can begin a clean new start / Oh to be the purest of pure in his arms / Yeah he, he will shield you from all harm"
I love talking anything music, so hopefully this becomes a regular thing! If you have any suggestions on good artists, let me know! I love discovering new music!

Tumblr Inspiration: Lana Del Rey's Style

Lately I've been following a lot of Lana Del Rey-centered blogs on tumblr. I just love her style so much. It's really been inspiring my fashion choices recently! Well, as much as it can, with my limited wardrobe and the incredibly hot Texas summer.

I've decided to gather some of my favorite pictures featuring Lana Del Rey and her beauty/fashion inspiration. All pictures are from born-to-adore-lana on tumblr!

Her hair is so perfect. I love the casual look in the first three. A loose tank top/shirt and skinny jeans is always my go-to choice of outfit! I also love mixing solid colors with polka dots! And I love the dress in the last one. The combination of lace and geometric shapes/lines are so cool!

Lana's makeup in the second one is seriously divine. I don't know what else to say about it. If I could get my makeup to look half that good, I'd be ecstatic.

I'd love to hear y'all's current style inspirations! Hope everyone's having a great week!

July Goals

Lately I've been finding that setting goals for myself helps me get things done. Groundbreaking, right? Apparently it is for me.

I currently use an app called Productive, and it's seriously helped me get on track with my health/fitness and organization goals! My goals consist of exercise, drinking water, getting things done around the house, and making time to spend with others!

With it being summer break, I find myself getting real lazy. Not just physically, but mentally as well. The Texas summer puts me in a bad mood more than I like to admit. I absolutely hate hate hate hot weather. Plus, add on heavy mosquito swarms and soaking humidity, and things just get worse and worse.

So to combat this summer slump, I'm setting myself some goals to look forward to achieving by the end of this month! And a huge bonus: August 1st is my birthday! So completely these goals will be even sweeter at 21!

Here are my July goals:

  • Exercise five times a week: I've made a commitment to myself to really get into a routine of doing yoga. I love it, I really do, but honestly sometimes I get so bored! Luckily I have a great app (Yoga Studio, featured on my about page!) and if I do a little bit of planning I can mix it up! They offer lots of different classes which will really help.
  • Save at least $200: I'm in the process of trying to find a savings plan that will work for me, but right now this will do! I want to focus on saving for life after college.
  • Read and finish a book: I'm honestly kind of embarrassed to post this one, because I used to love reading books. But like with everything else, I've gotten lazy about it, and I've forgotten just how much I love it. I've been meaning to read Aldous Huxley's The Devils of Loudun ever since I got it last Christmas!

Hopefully writing (typing) these down here will help me be more accountable for my goals and reach them successfully! Wish me luck!

Attempt # 2 at blogging

So I haven't blogged in a while.

I can never get into the routine of blogging, yet I always feel the need to blog after a while of not doing it. I'm not really sure why. Whenever I start, I really don't feel like I have anything worth writing. But when I'm not blogging, I do things and think "this would be such a cool thing to blog about!"

But this time will be different. I think I get too caught up in trying to categorize what my blog will be: fashion? cooking? lifestyle? I have no clue. I don't always wear cute clothes, but sometimes I do and I'd like to blog about it. I LOVE to cook, but I don't always get the opportunity to. As for lifestyle, there's not much to me. I lead a simple, kinda boring life, and I love it.

Well, I can't do anything but try again. Let's hope this time I get things right.
